The Gemmy Award design process

The Double Diamond process was applied to design the Gemmy Award.

Discover

The creative process began through collecting inspiration from trophy’s, sculptures, textures, typography, architectural and geometric forms. A mood board was created to explore the design direction and focus in on its look and feel.

Define

The Vilcek Prize designed by Stefan Sagmeister, a renowned Austrian-born US-based contemporary graphic designer and typographer was a great source of inspiration for the design of the Gemmy Award. The typographic base extruded to a point to form a pyramid reflected the characteristics that are the foundations to the development of skill and evolution of those who are awarded the Gemmy award. A series of preliminary sketches were created to help define the design of the award.

Develop

Carefully set typography of the characteristics that the Gemmy Award embodies (trailblazer, intelligent, enthusiastic, determined, innovative, loyal and generous) was crafted to form the base of the award.  The typographic base was then extruded to a point using 3d modelling software to form a vanishing point, symbolising the infinite potential and continuous development of the award recipients. The pyramid is coloured with Ultimate Edge Communications signature red, connecting the form with the company’s USP.

The pyramid is mounted on a square base which includes a description of the Gemmy Award and the names of the recipients. Like Segmeister’s design, the award can be displayed upright or rotated onto its side to display the set-out typography.

Deliver

Several options production options were explored such as creating a cast and using metal or resin to form the pyramid and creating a concrete base. The award will be 3d printed and mounted on a base with the description and recipient names directly printed on the base.
