When you think of getaway cars, bank heists and “The Fast and the Furious”, the Toyota Prius is probably the last car that comes to mind.
It may be eco-friendly and fuel-efficient, but you’d never expect to see the humble Prius dashing through traffic to escape the scene of a crime.
Which is probably what Toyota realised when they developed this ad to be broadcast during the historic Super Bowl 50.
The ad features a brazen bunch of bank burglars fleeing the scene of a heist – money still in hand. Their getaway car falls through so they’re forced to take option B: A Prius.
The ad is brilliant for a lot of reasons.
First, it grabs your attention by being unexpected. What’s gonna happen to these guys? Will they get away? Will the Prius pull it off?
Second, it uses this unexpected turn of events to showcase the strengths of the Prius in fresh, fun and (most importantly) memorable ways. During the ad, we see a Prius sneak, dash and zoom from and around the authorities.
And third, it’s inherently valuable because it’s entertaining.
But be warned: After seeing this ad, you might never look at the Toyota Prius the same way again.
